Q1: Do I need to backup from a fixed IP address?
A: There is no requirement for backing up from a fixed IP address.
Q2: Can I back up Linux or Apple Mac files?
A: These options are not available at the moment but are currently in development and will be coming soon
so please revisit the website for updates. If these options are important to you please register your

Q3: Can I back up MS Exchange files?
A: This option is not available at the moment but is currently in development and will
be coming soon so please revisit the website for updates. If this facility is important to
you please register your interest at enquiries@totalcomputerbackup.com and you will be notified when it is available.
Q4: Will TOTALcomputerbackup backup open files?
A: The TOTALcomputerbackup application cannot backup “locked” open files such as Exchange Servers
or SQL/Oracle databases etc. Open files within programs such as Word, Excel etc. can be backed up, however the
latest version may not be backed up if it has not been saved to the file.
Q5: Is TOTALcomputerbackup compliant with the Data protection Act?
A: TOTALcomputerbackup is registered with the Data Protection Registrar No. Z5282039.
Q6: How secure is the TOTALcomputerbackup service?
A: TOTALcomputerbackup is designed to be compliant with ISO17799.
Q7: How is the data transferred over the Internet to the TOTALcomputerbackup servers?
A: Data is encrypted and compressed at the client side prior to being uploaded to the secure
TOTALcomputerbackup servers. When the data is safely stored on the TOTALcomputerbackup servers it is further
encrypted to 448 bit level.
Q8: Can I use TOTALcomputerbackup if I also have a firewall?
A: If a firewall is present it must allow outgoing TCP connections to ports in the range 44400-44408 and 44450 plus HTTPS access for registration with WorldPay (this is port 443, but might go through a proxy, depending on local configuration).
Q9: Can I use TOTALcomputerbackup over a LAN?
A: Yes. You may need to reset certain permission or access rights, depending on how the network is configured.
Refer to Backing up over a server or LAN (Local Area Network)
Q10: Is it possible that a file that may contain a virus or trojan etc uploaded to the TOTALcomputerbackup servers could infect my
data on the same server?
A: The client application reads all the files, which are to be backed up, and calculates a hash for each. If the
hash does not match the hash of the same file from the previous backup, the file is uploaded. The client application
only reads the data to calculate the hash and upload the file. It never executes the file or any macros contained
within and stores it encrypted. The server also does not execute any of the backed up files or macros. If a file to
be backed up contains a virus or trojan, the backup on the server will still contain the virus or trojan, and the
restored file will also still contain the virus or trojan.
Q11: If the correct version of the file already exists on the computer will it still be restored?
A: No, TOTALcomputerbackup will recognise that the file is the same so there will be no need to restore it.
An email will be sent to you confirming this unless you have deactivated this facility.
Q12: Is it possible to use TOTALcomputerbackup to back up drives from colocated web servers hosted
in a remote data centre?
A: The client application (software) is developed for Windows platforms, if you install TOTALcomputerbackup on a computer running
Windows that has network access to colocated space then you will be able to back up those files.
Q13: Does TOTALcomputerbackup run on Windows Server 2003? On servers, does it run as a system service?
A: Yes, TOTALcomputerbackup runs
as a service on Windows NT based systems (NT 4.0, 2000, XP and SBS 2003).
Q14: Can I backup my full operating system and settings using TOTALcomputerbackup?
A: We recommend that you only backup your critical data files to TOTALcomputerbackup as it is likely you will have a copy of
your operating system available on CD to restore from, and if your machines require replacing, the new one/s will
in all likelihood have a new operating system installed.
