Backing up files over a Network or LAN
When backing up a server, ideally you should install TOTALcomputerbackup onto the server itself and backup the information directly.
TOTALcomputerbackup will backup most networked systems, which are mapped to a drive letter.
Please note that although you will always be able to back up your information using the "Backup Now" button on TOTALcomputerbackup (i.e manually), Scheduled or Automatic backups will only work on Windows 9x and NT when a user is logged in and has that drive mapped.
This is because when TOTALcomputerbackup runs automatically (scheduled) it works as a service.
Windows NT, 2000/3, XP Systems
To perform a scheduled backup from a network filesystem under Windows NT, 2000/3 or XP it is recommended that the files/directories to be backed up are selected through the 'Network Neighbourhood' icon in the TOTALcomputerbackup application instead of the drive letter. For more information on selecting files and directories see selecting data for backup.
In order to perform a scheduled backup of a network filesystem, the 'Automated Backup Daemon' service must be configured using the service applet in the control panel.
IMPORTANT: Use a user account which has access to that filesystem instead of the System Account (which is the default setting).
The service will not work if the user does not have a logon password.
If the user does not have a password, one will need to be set up for that user before the service will be able to run automatically.
The service must be restarted for this change to take effect.
Note. Administrative privileges are required to do this.

Important Note:
To perform a scheduled backup using a dial up connection under Windows 2000, the dial up connection password will need to be re-entered manually in the 'Change My Account Details' window.
To do this:
From the Start menu in the Windows taskbar Select > Programs > TOTALcomputerbackup > Reconfigure client
- Scroll down to the “Connection” section
-
Ensure settings for the connection are correct as auto filled in
- Manually overwrite the “Dialup user password”
- Click “Submit”
To configure the Automated Backup Daemon using Windows XP
-
From the Start menu in the Windows taskbar Select > Settings > Control Panel
- Select > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services
- Right click 'Automated Backup Daemon' and select > Properties
- Select > Log On tab
- Select > This Account:
- Either:
- Type user name
or - Click > Browse and select user
- Type user name
- Enter user's password in both password fields.
- Click > OK
- Click > Restart
Important Notes:
It is only possible for the service to use a single account.
The same account should be used by the service and the user defining the backups, otherwise it may be possible for the user to select files, which the service cannot access, causing automated backups to fail.
If the above instructions do not work for you, please in the first instance re-boot your machine and then try again. Re-booting often clears the system.
Windows 9x
Under Windows 9x (which does not have NT's services or security) an account cannot be set for the service. The service will always run with the username and password of the currently logged in user.
Mapped network drives can be backed up if the current user has them mapped. Files selected through the TOTALcomputerbackup 'Network Neighbourhood' icon can be backed up if the current user can access them, or if they can be accessed without a username and password.
If no user is logged in, files to be backed up over the network must be accessible without a username and password. This is not usually possible if these files are stored on a Windows NT/2000/XP system.
